Hello!
I'm Dr. Yang Seong-hyuk, the director of Hugo Plastic Surgery, where we prioritize our patients' needs first.
If you have a wide forehead or droopy eyes, this message is for you!
Today, I want to talk about forehead reduction and lift, which is a combined procedure known as forehead reduction lift.
Typically, we don't start by recommending a "forehead reduction lift."
Most often, patients come in because of droopy eyes, wanting to make their eyes look bigger, or to make their double eyelid line more defined.
Others may want to address the bulging upper eyelids. These reasons often lead to a decision to undergo double eyelid surgery or upper blepharoplasty.
However, after surgery on the eyelids alone, the distance between the eyes and eyebrows can decrease, which might result in a stronger or harsher appearance than desired.
In such cases, we consider a forehead lift. However, a forehead lift can make your forehead appear even larger.
So, what happens when you already have a wide forehead?
This is when the forehead reduction lift is recommended.
It's a surgery that both reduces the size of the forehead and lifts droopy eyes—a dual-benefit procedure!
The Procedure of Forehead Reduction Lift
The procedure involves making an incision along the hairline, removing an appropriate amount of forehead skin, and then lifting the forehead.
The scalp is then lowered from the top of the head and sutured together to complete the process.
Typically, about 1.7 cm to 2 cm of forehead skin is removed, though in cases where the skin is very elastic, an additional 1-2 mm may be removed.
During the surgery, the lifted skin is securely fixed to the skull, providing both the desired lifting effect and forehead reduction, leading to satisfying results.
Now, let me address the concerns that may arise during the recovery process. Generally, there are two main concerns at different stages:
Concern 1: Scarring
No matter how naturally we try to align the incision with the hairline using a zigzag pattern, the incision is long, so the scar tends to be noticeable at first.
Our staff member who had this surgery six months ago documented her scar at different stages with photos.
Scar after 7 Days of Forehead Reduction Lift
As you can see, the stitch marks are quite noticeable after the initial removal of stitches, leading to concerns about whether the scar will ever fade.
However, I assured her, "It will improve! The scar might get slightly darker up until the third month, but it will gradually fade and become almost invisible."
Scar after 2 and 4 Months Post-Surgery
After about 2 to 3 months, the red scar began to lighten, and as hair started to grow around the scar, it became less noticeable.
Scar after 6 Months Post-Surgery
By six months post-surgery, the scar became so faint that it’s barely noticeable unless you look very closely, making it blend naturally with the surrounding skin.
Concern 2: Sensation Loss
For about the first month post-surgery, most people are not overly concerned about sensation loss because they are more focused on the appearance of the scar and wondering if the awkward look on the forehead will improve.
However, about three months later, sensation loss in the scalp and crown area might start to become noticeable.
This is a common issue that can occur with forehead reduction lift surgery, either in general or in localized areas.
While this usually improves gradually over time, full recovery of sensation may take up to one to two years.
In some rare cases, patients report discomfort such as itching, but these sensations are typically part of the process of the nerves gradually recovering and will improve over time.
As the scar and sensation recover gradually, patients find that the satisfaction with the forehead reduction lift surgery is very high.
It's a surgery that effectively addresses both droopy eyes and a wide forehead, making it one of the most recommended procedures by those who have undergone it.
